Chapter 11: Website Statistics
 1. Analysis Settings
 2. Understanding Visitor Statistics

StudyHub provides detailed information on the usage statistics of your website. It will help you determine how much traffic the site is sustaining, who is accessing it, where they came from, and which parts are used more than others. You have complete control over how this information is collected and displayed.

11.1 Analysis Settings

Clicking ‘Website Stats’ will display the page above. It is possible to change the settings of the access counter and logging facility as follows:
  • Hit Count Type. This will change the way hits are counted. It can be set to either ‘unique hits’ or ‘all hits’. When set to ‘all hits’, the counter will increment the counter(s) every time the page is accessed or ‘hit’. This can be used to measure the total load on your server by measuring how many times the website is accessed. ‘Unique hits’ will present a more accurate picture of how many actual users are accessing the site. It will only increment the counter(s) when a new user (with a different IP address) visits, or 10 minutes have passed since the last IP address accessed the website.
  • Disable Counters. This will turn off all the counters and will not display the count totals on the main website. This can be toggled on or off at any point.
  • Counter View State. You can choose to make the counter visible or invisible to users of the main website. This will not disable the counter, which will still count hits, but the counter statistics will only be viewable in the Control Panel.
  • Access Log. You can choose how many previous visitors’ details are logged back to, from 10 to 500. The visitor details will be displayed at the bottom of the page (see Chapter 11.2).

11.2 Understanding Visitor Statistics

A Visitor log similar to the illustration above will give you more in-depth information of who is accessing your site. The table displays the following attributes for each logged visitor:
  • Time of hit.
  • Visitor’s IP address (or domain address if available).
  • Visitor information. This displays what browser / operating system the visitor was using to access the website and the link (if any) they followed to get to your site. If they typed the URL of your website directly then ‘Direct Hit’ will be displayed. If they hit the website via a link from the site itself ‘Internal Referral’ will be displayed, otherwise the hyperlink of where they came from will be shown. This helps to determine if another website has a link to your site.
Click ‘Reset Visitor Log’ to clear the list of visitors. You can also click ‘Reset’ in the Site Statistics table to reset all the counters back to 0.
